Hebrew (נבל) means - "harp, lyre, lute, psaltery". Nabal was the husband of Abigail.
According to the 1st Book of Samuel Nabal was a rich man who was also described as being harsh and surly. It is unknown whether "Calebite" is a reference to Caleb the representative of Judah, Caleb the son of Hezron, or another Caleb. David and his band of men who had been outlawed by king Saul were living off the Wilderness of Paran and providing voluntary protection to the shepherds in the area.
